Easy Ways to Get Relief for Sciatic Pain Symptoms

By Keira Adams

The sciatic nerve is the longest and widest single nerve in the human body. It runs not so aimlessly from the base of the spine and ends in both feet with a gigantic fall. Knowing this certainly helps one understand how sciatica pain works. Indeed, it follows the exact same path as the sciatic nerve with pain stretching right to the feet. Causes for this type of pain are standing or sitting for long periods of time, overstretching, and in some cases lifting weights. But whatever the cause is a sufferer will definitely want relief for sciatic pain symptoms like numbness and itchiness.

The itchy and sometimes hot pain in the lower back and legs can best be relieved with exercise. Stretching exercises targeted at the hamstring are one of the best forms of nerve pain treatment. Lie on your back; hold the back of your thigh and lift your leg at a 90 degree angle. Switch legs and do this continuously for a good ten minutes with breaks in between.

The hamstring exercise is not the only one and certainly not the best. There is the psoas stretch that involves lying on your back, bending your knees and then holding them at your chest. This exercise gets rid of the itch or numbness with very little of your conscious effort.

Acupuncture has been in use for years in physiotherapy. Acupuncture is where hair thin needles are pushed into skin pores to ease tension related symptoms. Carry out acupuncture in the affected areas carefully with a registered professional. Very slowly all tension will go away and normal blood circulation will commence.

Ice packs are used effectively by some people for sciatic nerve pain treatment. They apply the ice packs in the areas affected by pain to numb any acute pains associated with sciatic pain. An alternative is using ice packs together with heat packs. This combination is the perfect remedy as it stretches the muscles with no physical effort applied.

If all these don't work you can try your hand at massage treatment. The good thing about a massage is that it helps to boost the flow of blood around the back and legs. Sciatic pain sometimes originates from an inhibited flow of blood caused by improper sitting habits or lifting of heavy weights. A massage also encourages the release of endorphins, the feel good hormones.

As an alternative you can try pharmaceutical medicines. There are drugs like naproxin that assist in fighting inflammation that comes with sciatic pain. But sometimes injections work faster if they are not excessively used. Injection treatment on the affected area can make use of epidural steroid injections. - 32188
