Common Root Causes For High Back Aches

There are many potential causes of upper back pain. The upper bank consists of many different structures and conditions vary which can affect it. The upper back is the skeletal structure commonly known as the thoracic cage. This structure consists of the 12 vertebrae and their corresponding ribs that connect to the breastbone. The thoracic cage provides protection for the major organs of the body. Generally, this is a fairly stable area but certain conditions can cause discomfort.

The spinal column is designed to provide support to the body and must also maintain its flexibility. The upper back actually experiences very little movement. The neck and the lower back tend to move more than the upper back.

Soft tissue injuries usually involve either a sprain or a strain in the back. If the muscle somehow gets stretched excessively, this is termed as a muscle strain. In the case of a sprain, ligaments which hold the spinal bones together can be injured. These are the two most frequently cited causes of upper back pain.

The two most common conditions which accounts for the most common causes of back pain are strains and sprains. These are soft tissue injuries. The soft tissues must have sufficient strength yet have enough flexibility to perform their functions.

When we picture over exerting our muscles, we think that we are strenuously working them out. In the case of upper back pain, working at the computer can cause much discomfort to this area. If the muscles are held under tension, they become fatigued and stiff.

Arthritis is another potential problem for the upper back. The most common form is osteoarthritis. This condition occurs with the wearing down of cartilage around the joints. This can cause swelling, stiffness and aches. Other conditions affecting the upper back include fibromyalgia, osteoporosis and ruptured discs.

Some of the typical treatments for upper back pain are exercises, physical therapy, chiropractic treatment and massage therapy. Exercises include a lot of stretching to improve flexibility. Physical therapy uses stretching exercises and massage to naturally help the body. Chiropractic manipulation may be used to help straighten and better aligns the spine. Massage therapy may be given by therapist or a massage chair.
